Saturday, October 24: Avignon, France
Welcome to Avignon, a city of unparalleled beauty, curving its way over the river Rhône since 1840. The Pont Saint-Bénézet gained international fame through the song “Sur le pont d’Avignon.” Crossing it brings you to the Papal Palace—one of Europe’s largest and most important medieval buildings. This grand monument came to be thanks to the Archbishop of Bordeaux, who, unwilling to travel to Rome for his papal consecration, had himself crowned in Lyon and commissioned a palace in Avignon. (D)
Sunday, October 25: Avignon & Arles, France
Spend the morning continuing your exploration of Avignon before setting off for Arles, a pearl of Provence surrounded by some of Europe’s most beautiful natural parks. From Roman amphitheatres to proud patrician houses, Arles is steeped in history and art. Follow in the footsteps of Van Gogh as you wander through the town that inspired some of his greatest works. Tuesday, October 27: Tarascon & Châteauneuf-du-Pape, France
Tarascon is rich with medieval charm. Visit the magnificent Tarascon Fortress, built in the 15th century as both a royal residence and a defensive stronghold on the Rhône. This remarkably preserved site now houses a museum showcasing art, furniture, and local history. Don’t miss the Collegiate Church of Saint Martha and the town’s celebration of its mythical Tarasque monster.
